I believe my day would have made even Paracelsus weary. And to think it began with Professor Carpenter's assurance over breakfast that today looked to be most auspicious! (I hope one of you lot enjoyed my share of felicity.)

The circus began just after breakfast when one of our older students arrived, sporting a rather advanced case of the clap. I suppose he could deny the urgency of his symptoms no longer. Of course, this sort of thing never ends with one case, though it's fortunate that he was quite certain he'd got it before coming to school. Nonetheless, his list of persons with whom he's had relations of a sufficiently personal nature will require a number of awkward interviews in the days ahead. And, of course, I had no choice but refer him to Minerva for the disciplinary consequences of his having knowingly endangered the health of several of his classmates.

After that, and in quick succession, I've had six cases of stomach cramp, two stanch-resistant nosebleeds, one severely allergic reaction to sneezewort, one runespoor bite, and not one but two children with limbs broken in a late-afternoon flying mishap. I suppose all the first years with any aptitude for flying have already tested out, so we're down to those who are terrified, vertiginous, or hopelessly inept. On the bright side, it's been years since Madam Hooch has had a fatality, so I'm sure they'll all muddle through eventually.

I don't suppose you'd care for a nightcap again tonight, Minerva? By the time I've finished the day's parchmentwork, I'm sure it would be welcome.
