I've just had an odd encounter. Here at St Mungo's, between sessions.
I'd stopped up to the First Floor to visit Midas Wellfleet, an old friend who's had a time of it since being bitten by an Aureata beetle. (He's struggling, I'm afraid, Pomona. You should come see him soon, if you've a mind to do that.) As I left the ward, I surprised a knot of wizards out in the corridor, who acted distinctly as if I'd caught them doing something they oughtn't to.
And, because Fate seems bent on punishing me, it was Facinorous Stint speaking to Meniscus Fulton and someone else I didn't recognise. Fulton's an Auror. One of the ones who investigated the unpleasantness during that YPL outing in January that put Aurora Sinistra in such hot water.
I know Aurora thinks Stint's stirring up trouble for her. We've met for lunch and a chat a couple of times at a quiet cafe she likes--which is another story, about which I'll only say here that I believe inviting me there was a sign we're on a bit more familiar footing than previously--and she's confided that Stint has been causing fresh trouble on the committee. What his scheming amounts to, she can't entirely pin down, but it's making her very apprehensive about the success of the upcoming CCF training weeks.
As you know, I've my own reasons to be wary of Healer Stint, and since I've had my wings clipped and my jesses tied to the perch here at St Mungo's of late, I've had some leisure to turn Stint's scrutiny of me back his direction.
That said, it was a complete accident just now, my stumbling upon his tête-à-tête with Fulton and that other wizard. If I'd been skulking about trying to listen in, I'd have made sure I wasn't seen. As it is, I've been caught catching him at something without having actually learned anything useful at all.
You should have seen the dark looks they gave me. Gracious. If I'd been a pot of milk, I'd have curdled.

We've barely spoken the last few years; he seemed to feel his work at Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures was quite all-consuming.

Date: 2012-07-17 01:47 am (UTC)Midas' situation is rather dire, I'm afraid. And while it's a terrible way to put it, I think his work may literally consume him before it's over.
The bite was on his palm. It's taken all of his fingers but the tip of his thumb, and it's run up the whole of his arm. His Healer confided that it may already have got into his lymphatic system, as well, so really I'm afraid it may be beyond their ability to cure him.
He's taking it with his usual good humour, though. Wanted me to see if I could find a good photographer to do a portrait that would capture the 'gleaming gaudiness' of it. (His words.)
